Vivitrol Treatment
Vivitrol Treatment
Vivitrol is an extended-release once-a-month formulation of naltrexone used to treat alcohol and opioid addiction. Naltrexone is designed to stop the euphoria that alcohol and opioids can cause while reducing cravings. Vivtrol is not addictive and does not cause withdrawal symptoms. While Naltrexone prevents endorphins from binding opioid receptors in people who consume alcohol, it also blocks opioid drugs from binding to opioid receptors in the brain. This effect makes the treatment more effective, and it prevents relapse.
Vivitrol is an actual injection that needs to be administered every four weeks. This makes Vivitrol much easier to use and eliminates the risk of missing a dose – a simple mistake that can often lead to a relapse, which can reverse weeks, months, or even years of hard work.
The benefits of receiving monthly injections included:
A more consistent, stable dose
Lower frequency of side effects
Improved adherence
Vivitrol® is an extended-release naltrexone injection used to support treatment for alcohol and opioid dependence. It works by blocking the effects of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals, which helps reduce the rewarding effects of alcohol and opioids. This leads to decreased cravings and a reduced desire to use these substances.
Naltrexone binds to and blocks the receptors in the brain that are normally activated by endorphins, preventing the pleasurable effects of alcohol and opioids. It also reduces the release of dopamine in response to these substances, further decreasing their reinforcing effects.
The extended-release formulation allows naltrexone to be slowly released into the body over time, maintaining consistent medication levels and minimizing the need for frequent dosing.
Vivitrol® is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive treatment program that includes counseling and support. While it is not a cure for alcohol or opioid dependence, it can help individuals maintain abstinence and reduce the risk of relapse.
Vivitrol® injections are generally safe and effective, but some patients may experience side effects. The most common include:
Nausea & Vomiting
Shortly after an injection, mild nausea or vomiting may occur due to the body’s response to the medication or interactions with other drugs. These symptoms usually fade within a few hours or days and often decrease with subsequent injections.
Headache
Headaches are a common side effect and are typically temporary. They may lessen as treatment continues.
Muscle Cramps
Some patients experience muscle cramps or tightness. These are usually temporary and resolve on their own without long-term harm.
Injection Site Reactions
Injection site reactions can range from mild pain or bumps to, in rare cases, blistering or skin lesions. Severe reactions may require medical attention.
There are steps to help manage Vivitrol side effects:
Take appropriate medications: Consult your doctor or treatment provider for recommended options.
Avoid intense physical activity: Exercise may worsen nausea, headaches, or muscle cramps.
Rest and stay hydrated: Proper rest can help reduce side effects more quickly.
If you experience severe side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately for guidance and treatment.
